Health Problems in Indonesia

Heal the world, make it better place

for you and for me and the entire human race

there are people dying if you care enough for the living

make a better place for you and for me

(Michael Jackson-Heal the World)

First two weeks of January 2007, there are bird flu cases in many area including Jakarta. And then Dengue Hameorrhagic Fever (DHF). According to Depkes (Health Department), up until 31 January 2007, DHF has caused 144 death from 8.019 patients. Yet health problem in Indonesia is far much bigger and complex than bird flu and DHF. Anemia, diarrhea and TBC for example. Today there are about 20 million heart problem patients in Indonesia and it had caused 30% death in Java and Bali. Infectious disease and parasites is the causes of 22% death. In the year 2005, Indonesia have 5 million children suffering inadequate nutrition. Unhealthy environment yields 557.000 new TBC cases every year. About 250.000 of them was infectious TBC. Every year, there are 100.000 death of children cause of diarrhea leads by bad sanitation and no access for clean water. Health insurance issues, unrational drug use, fake drugs is another health problems in Indonesia.

What pharmacist can do to help? Providing high quality drug with low prices and equal distribution chain. Promoting rational drug use to patient and physician. Developing rational pricing policy. Strengthen the surveillance of drug industry. Developing health insurance for all citizens. It will be an enormous task, it will be hard but it is possible. Together we can.
